Did all the dragons in the world
become extinct,
die as dinosaurs
or are they still here

because I saw what must have been one
yesterday, perched on a branch
shaking the damp from its fairy wings
and stretching its long blue tail.
And every clear evening
they’re all around the lake,
skimming the surface
and hunting mosquitoes,

probably remembering an ancient day
when they spread their wings
after bigger prey.
