Marek
Lugowski was born in Poland and left for USA with his family when
he was entering high school. He edits A Small Garlic Press
in Chicago and co-edits its online and print poetry magazine "Agnieszka's
Dowry". He has been translating the entire poetic canon of
another late Polish great, Halina Poswiatowska, when he
is not working as an educational software Java programmer. He
translated "Barwy" on 19 November 2000, the night before
his first and only (so far) trip to Iceland, where he had time
to translate another Polish poem, by Boleslaw Lesmian, from the
tome "I Am Touring the Universe", while holed up in Arnarstapi
by Snaeffelsnesjokull. While "Barwy" was sent into Usenet (the
internet discussion groups archived by Google), the Lesmian English
translation, the only copy, was sent from Borgarness on the back
of a postcard depicting a Hopewell Indian Culture copper bird,
as a thank you to Marek's local hosts of the deserted hostel at
Stapi.
