D. H. MELHEM, Ph.D., is the author of five books of poetry, beginning
with Notes on 94th Street (1972; 1979), the first poetry collection
in English published by an Arab American woman. Other works: Rest
in Love (1975, 1978; reissued 1995); Country (1998); Blight,
a novel, 1995); a musical drama (1999), over 50 essays, 3 anthologies,
including RAWI's A Different Path (coedited with Leila Diab,
2000); and two scholarly books, of which Gwendolyn Brooks (1987)
was the first comprehensive study of the poet. Among numerous awards
for poetry and prose: a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship,
a 1991 American Book Award for Heroism in the New Black Poetry,
and a 2001 Ph.D. Alumni Achievement Award from the City University
of New York. She serves as vice-president of the International
Women's Writing Guild.
